Drive-out to Garibaldi
The July 13, 2024 JOCO event has finally come to fruition! Previously the club has taken this train ride in April, 2012, so it has been awhile since we have made this trip.
On Saturday, July 13, 2024, those wanting to join the drive-out will meet in the southern parking lot of Westview High School (4200 NW 185th Ave) at 7:45 AM. We will have a brief talk about the drive and depart promptly at 8AM. We will depart for Camp 18, where we will have breakfast and a “pit stop.” We will leave as close to 10:15 AM as possible, and proceed to the Oregon Coast Scenic Railway in Garibaldi.
The route will take us from highway 26 to Oregon 53, where we will turn left off of US 26. From there we will drive approximately 20 miles and turn left at the Nehalem Inn to join Miami River Road and proceed to US 101. From there we will turn north on US 101 to “downtown” Garibaldi and our destination.
Oregon 53 and Miami River Road offer some very twisty bits, and the group is encouraged to safely and responsibly enjoy the handling qualities of your Jaguar. The usual precaution is that you should anticipate a somewhat rapid pace (where permissible) along the way, so please be prepared to drive at – or slightly above – the posted speed limit. FAIR WARNING: Some portions of the roads are in need of repair, so there are some bumps and jiggles along the way that may cause some lower cars to “bottom out”.

We will observe “Caravan Rules” and participants will be asked to keep the car behind them in their mirror(s) to be assured that the group will remain together as much as possible.
We will arrive in time to take the noon train ride to Rockaway and return to Garibaldi. The train ride is 30 minutes to Rockaway (and quite scenic – bring a camera); there is a 30 minute layover in Rockaway, and then a 30 minute return ride. Please book your tickets in advance here: Oregon Coast Train Rides | Oregon Coast Scenic Railroad . Please note that Seniors and veterans will pay $25.00/person for the round trip. WIth taxes, the total for two people is $53.00. Adults are $30.00/person, children are $22.00/person. Tickets may be available for purchase when we arrive, but to assure a seat on the train please book as far in advance as possible and remember to book the Noon departure from Garibaldi to Rockaway and the return that will arrive in Garibaldi at 1:30 PM.
Participants can preselect a completely open car, an open sided car with a roof, an enclosed car with tables, or a historic enclosed car as their options for the ride. There is about a 50/50 chance that the steam engine will be in use on the day of our trip.
As usual, this is the coast, so it would be wise to bring a windbreaker, umbrella, dress in layers, and also bring some sunscreen.
Carl Foleen will lead the group drive to Garibaldi, Tim Ashcroft will lead the drive from Garibaldi to Cannon Beach where everyone can grab some delicious pizza at Pizza a’fetta, ice cream, or other treats before driving back to Portland.
